I bought a new 8GB SD card for my HTC Desire phone to replace the old 4GB card. Migrating is pretty easy.
You connect your phone to your computer and copy the contents of the SD card to a folder on your computer. Then, you turn off your phone, replace the SD card with the new one and turn your phone back on.
Connect it to your computer again and put all the data from your back-up folder back to your phone. Overwrite any files or folders that might already be on the SD card. Reboot your phone and you’re done.
The problem was, that after rebooting all my programs that were installed could not be found anymore. When I tapped an icon on my homescreen it would just say The linked program is no longer installed on your phone.
When I double checked my back-up folder, it appeared that I forgot to copy the hidden files as well and programs are usually stored in a hidden folder named .android_secure. So next time you make a back-up, don’t forget to include hidden files and folders!
On Unix or Mac OS X you can do that with the following command, assuming your current directory is the SD card of your phone.
rsync -a . /path/to/backup
